The Africa Prize

The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) is the UK’s national academy of engineering. It setup the Africa Prize in 2014 to acknowledge and nurture the growing environment of African engineering innovation, and support high standards using its network and resources.

De Charles has been working closely with the RAE to grow the relevance of the Africa Prize, through its changing message, reach and the success of its alumni.

The Africa Prize’s process includes selecting 12 candidates amongst the hundreds of applications, from entrepreneurs who have founded and are running technology ventures in and around Africa’s 54 nations. The Prize’s team then invests in these candidates, providing them with six months’ worth of mentorship, workshops, lectures and programmes aimed at supporting their businesses in their current form, prior to selecting a winner and two runners-up who received £25,00 and £10,000 each respectively.
De Charles’ work has focused both on the Prize’s entrepreneurs and central purpose. Since 2016 De Charles has directly facilitated over $3.5m of investment and an extra $500k of revenue, in Africa Prize alumni companies. Going into its fourth year, De Charles’ work is focusing more on growth and the RAE’s longer-term vision for the Prize, which will be implemented through narratives and media activation.
